Our 4th Anniversary Tradition: Photos taken at Moraine Lake in Banff, Canada
From the moment I saw the photos of the bright blue water with the mountain peaks towering behind it, I knew that Moraine Lake was perfect for our anniversary photo shoot. It’s the annual destination photo shoot in which I wear my wedding dress and Chris wears his tux and we go to a new place for photos. For the Traveling Love Dress photos (as we like to call it!), I always try to choose a destination that seems extraordinary or exciting to me. There just has to be some sort of emotion or connection and Moraine Lake was more than perfect.
Moraine Lake is one of those hard to get to areas of the world that is only reachable a few months of the year due to risk of avalanche. Luckily, our anniversary is in August, so our only dilemma was beating the other eager photographers to the parking lot before it was full! The morning of I woke up at 2 to get ready to meet my aunt Melissa and her friend, Alice, to meet us at the parking lot.
The best time to see Moraine Lake is early in the morning.
I had done a lot of research to know that the best time of day was early in the morning when the sun hits the mountain peaks. I had seen the previous day the line to the parking lot fill up quickly so I knew it would close down when it was full. Unfortunately, we weren’t just racing the eager photographer looking for the best place to take photos at Moraine Lake. We were also trying to beat the rain! There was just a bit of blue in the sky as we made our way up the rock pile trail in my wedding dress and hiking boots. Most people taking photos were very polite to move to allow us to take a quick photo (without us even asking!) so that we did not have anyone else in our lake photo. Here are some of our favorites:
We ended up making it around the hotel at Lake Moraine and back to our vehicles before the rain began. We were also very lucky because the fires had started in the nearby area and the wind and blow in the smoke which and settled in the area. The cold front which had brought the rain actually cleared out the sky making this the first morning in which we were able to see the mountain peaks. It all worked out perfectly as 2 days later the smoke moved back in and we could not see very far again.
The morning after this was even more perfect, however my aunt had already left to go home. I did take some photos and put a couple of them together to get a more sunny photo. I did find that the water wasn’t as blue. What do you think? Comment below and let me know where we should go next year!
