New York City Christmas Itinerary

New York City during Christmas is nothing short of magical. From the dazzling lights of Rockefeller Center to the festive window displays along Fifth Avenue, the city transforms into a winter wonderland that attracts visitors from around the globe. Planning the perfect Christmas itinerary can ensure you experience the best of NYC’s yuletide cheer. Here’s a 3 day itinerary of New York at Christmas.

Planning Your Trip: Deciding when to visit NYC during the Christmas season is crucial. The city lights up from late November and remains festive until the New Year. Booking accommodations and tickets for attractions in advance is advisable to avoid last-minute price hikes and sold-out shows. I advise going during the week if possible to avoid the large crowds on the weekend. However, as New York City is one of the best places to visit at Christmas, it will still be busy.

What to Pack: NYC winters can be chilly, with occasional snowfall. Warm clothing, including coats, hats, gloves, and waterproof, comfortable shoes, are essentials. Don’t forget your camera to capture the city’s festive decorations.

Unless you are arriving early in the morning, I would not make any reservations for your first day in New York City in case your arrival is delayed. If you have more time, then you can add more activities. If not, you aren’t missing out on Christmas activities in NYC.

The first night, I advise dinner at a Christmas inspired restaurant. There are many places to eat in NYC at Christmas. One of the most popular is a German restaurant called Rolf’s but you must have reservations to avoid the enormous line. Other Christmas inspired bars in NYC are Magic Hour Rooftop at Moxy Times Square, Frosty’s Christmas Bar, and Lillie’s Victorian Establishment.

Take a shopping trip at Winter Wonderland at Bryant Park. My favorite, it is an open air, European inspired market with shops, food booths, and a skating rink.

Start the morning with an early showing of the Rockettes. The Rockettes, with their legendary precision and synchronicity, perform iconic numbers like the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and the “Living Nativity,” bringing stories and holiday fantasies to life on stage. The high-energy performances, intricate dance routines, and the sheer spectacle of the show leave spectators of all ages in awe, making it a cherished tradition for many.

After watching the Rockettes, take to the Rockefeller Center area for ice skating and exploring the area.

Check out the legendary holiday window displays along Fifth Avenue. I like to do this at night AND during the day if time permitted. I have learned that the crowds are thinner around 10PM. This is a good time to see the lighting displays around Radio City Music Hall and see the Rockefeller Tree without so many people. Just remember, the Rockefeller Tree lights go off at midnight.

Squeeze in a Broadway play before the late viewing of the Rockefeller lights if that is something you are interested in.

Start the day with a visit to Summit One or Top of the Rock.

Take the afternoon to explore Christmas markets and places like St Patrick’s Cathedral and Grand Central Station. A carriage ride around Central Park is also a great afternoon activity.

End the day with a tour of Dyker Heights. This tour is one of my all time favorite Christmas tours that I have done. When picked up on our bus, we were given a candy cane as we took off on our journey to view the amazing light displays.

Opt for a centrally located hotel to minimize travel time to major sights. Here are a few ideas based on budget:
